Founded in 2017 by a group of friends with a shared love for tekno and acid music, DOF’s journey began after a life-changing encounter with a free tekno party under a bridge. This moment sparked a deep connection to soundsystem culture and ignited the crew’s mission to bring high-quality events and immersive music experiences to their hometown of Ostend, Belgium. Since its inception, DOF has embraced a “quality-first” philosophy, focusing on delivering the best possible experience for partygoers while preserving the DIY spirit that defines their approach to music and event organizing.
On March 28, 2025, DOF will host a special event in Ostend, Belgium, bringing together music lovers from all over for an unforgettable night. In an exclusive interview with Collin, a representative of DOF, he shared insights into the collective’s journey, the challenges of organizing in Belgium’s evolving underground scene, and their commitment to creating powerful, intimate experiences that resonate with their audience. As we look ahead to the upcoming event in Ostend, the interview sheds light on what makes DOF’s approach to music and event production truly unique, as well as the exciting future that awaits both the collective and the broader underground scene.
How did the idea of DOF Soundsystem come about? What inspired you to form this crew and get into music and event organizing?
In 2016, when me and my friends were about 18 or 19, we caught wind of a party happening under a bridge close to our hometown. We biked over to discover it was a tekno free party by WTF Soundsystem. That night something clicked—the music they were playing and the “if you know, you know” mentality. I never experienced anything like that. It was a relatively small party but nonetheless opened my eyes to a world I’d never seen. Also, the fact that they were playing vinyl records under a dusty bridge really made me chuckle. After that, soundsystems and soundsystem culture was all I could think about. When my older colleague told me he was selling a pair of double 18-inch front-loaded subwoofers and two top speakers, it was decided. We were going to start a soundsystem.
Over the years, the scene in Ostend and Belgium in general has changed a lot. How have you seen the underground scene evolve, and what role has DOF played in that change?
When we started, tekno and acid music wasn’t as out in the open as it is now. Most parties being held were illegal, unless they were to cover costs from fines or legal fees. Apart from a few small free parties in our first year, we gravitated to legal parties because it allowed us to really focus on the production-side. It also allowed us to grow our soundsystem. I think compared to when we started, legal parties have become a lot more popular, introducing tekno and acid music to a whole new generation of young people, many of whom are starting their own soundsystems with their friends.
“Quality-first” is one of your main philosophies. How does this reflect in your events, both in terms of the music you choose and the overall organization?
For us, a big part of throwing legal parties is keeping the DIY and artistic spirit alive but in a setting where we can maximize the experience for the people who come. We host about four parties a year, but we really put our all into them, you know? Booking artists we look up to, trying to outdo ourselves with the lights and lasers every time, and just striving to be the best we can be. We always throw parties in our hometown, which isn’t very big or central in our country. But we aim for people to think, “What the fuck, that’s a crazy lineup for such a small venue!” Our goal is to bring that big party vibe while keeping it small and intimate. That’s what it’s all about for us.
Tekno is a passion that unites you. What makes this genre so special to you? Is there an aspect of tekno culture that made you fall in love with it?
For me, it was definitely the horn-loaded dance stack style of soundsystem that blew me away. That, combined with the rhythmic and spacey nature of tekno music, just made me fall in love. I really feel that tekno and acid music are genres full of emotion—something unexplainable that’s unique to them. When everyone is united and locked into the same groove in front of the same speaker stack, everything just feels right. There really isn’t much else to compare it to. If you know, you know, I guess. Haha.
In Europe, the crackdown on free tekno events is a hot topic. How do you experience this situation in Belgium, and how do you think it affects your work as event organizers?
I feel like Belgium is a particularly difficult place to organize free parties. In recent years, many parties have ended in gear seizures and violence against partygoers. With some high-profile teknival raves in Belgium dominating the news, now everybody and their grandma knows what tekno is. For us, it put a spotlight on what we do. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, but I know it was inevitable.
Your annual free rave at the skate park has become a major event for many. What does this event mean to you, and what challenges have you faced in keeping it free and accessible?
This is actually a topic close to my heart. When we were teenagers, all we ever did was hang out at our skatepark. When we started DOF, we threw three parties there that summer—it was where we got our start. Ever since then, each summer, we return full force and organize a free tekno rave, which means the world to us. I’m sure it’s been the first exposure to tekno and this scene for a lot of younger people. It always feels like a full-circle moment for us, just seeing how far we’ve come. Last year, there was a petition with about 40 signatures to seize events at this site, citing noise pollution. This came from a newly built apartment complex, mostly occupied by senior citizens. A counter-petition by youth club/organization De Kim and us reached around 1,400 signatures. How I see it, we gave our first party at the skatepark, and that’s where I hope we’ll hold our last.
How does your technical work, as audio and lighting engineers, impact the experience of your events? How important is it for you that the technical side matches the music and atmosphere you want to create?
For us, that’s the core of a good party. We get really geeky when it comes to audio and lighting. Me being a theater/audio engineer and our LD, Matisse De Groote, being a theater/lighting engineer, we approach event production in a certain way. It’s still DIY, but we try to achieve the highest production standard we can. The venue we typically organize our parties at isn’t that big or very high, but thanks to our experience and our respective professions, we really get the most out of it. Capturing that big party vibe in a small, intimate setting—that’s what it’s all about.
Belgium has a long tradition of underground electronic music, but the scene is facing increasing pressure. How do you see the future of the Belgian music scene, and how do you think the music culture can coexist with the crackdown?
I personally believe there will always be underground music culture as long as there is youth culture; they go hand in hand. Where there’s a will, there’s always a way. It’s ever-evolving, sure, but always omnipresent in one way or another. Especially here in Belgium, I’ve noticed a lot of public support for raves and rave culture. A lot of people’s moms and dads raved in the ’80s and ’90s, in a different setting and musical genre maybe, but the spirit stays the same.
A recent article on our SUM blog (HERE) dives into the meaning of the term Rave. What does Rave mean to you?
For me, raving is about experiencing music that you love in the ideal setting with your friends. Whether it’s small raves you organize yourself or huge warehouse parties, it’s all about the music and the shared experience with others. I’ve met so many wonderful people through organizing these parties because we all share that passion. At the end of the day, we’re all there for the same reason: the rave.
Looking to the future, how do you see DOF Soundsystem evolving? Are there any new projects, collaborations, or challenges you’re excited about right now? And what would be your dream for the future of the underground scene, not just in Belgium but all over Europe?
With DOF, we have a lot planned for 2025! It’s going to be our most active year yet. As for the future, right now in Belgium, there are a lot of younger people starting their own soundsystems with their friends and organising their own raves. It’s so awesome to see because it means the scene is ever-evolving. I hope to see more of that “do it yourself, can-do” attitude. We’re currently working on a few collaborations for the future with some of those guys. In an ideal setting, everyone keeps throwing raves for the right reasons, and we all inspire each other, just like WTF Soundsystem inspired us. We hope to do the same.

DOF Soundsystem è un collettivo che incarna lo spirito della musica elettronica underground, nato dalla passione e dalla voglia di creare esperienze autentiche e significative per la propria comunità.
Fondato nel 2017 da un gruppo di amici accomunati dall’amore per la tekno e l’acid, il loro viaggio è iniziato dopo una folgorante esperienza a un free party sotto un ponte. Questo momento ha acceso in loro una profonda connessione con la cultura dei soundsystem e la missione di portare eventi di alta qualità nella loro città natale, Ostenda, in Belgio. Fin dal principio, DOF ha abbracciato una filosofia “quality-first”, offrendo esperienze uniche ai partecipanti e mantenendo vivo lo spirito DIY che li contraddistingue.

In un’intervista esclusiva, Collin, rappresentante di DOF, ha raccontato il percorso del collettivo, le sfide nell’organizzare eventi nell’evoluta scena underground belga e il loro impegno nel creare esperienze intime e potenti. Con uno sguardo all’evento di Ostenda, emergono chiaramente l’unicità di DOF e il futuro entusiasmante che li attende insieme alla scena underground più ampia.
Come è nata l’idea di DOF Soundsystem? Cosa vi ha ispirato a formare questo collettivo e ad entrare nel mondo della musica e dell’organizzazione di eventi?
Nel 2016, quando io e i miei amici avevamo circa 18 o 19 anni, abbiamo sentito parlare di una festa che si stava svolgendo sotto un ponte vicino alla nostra città natale. Siamo andati in bici e abbiamo scoperto che si trattava di un free party tekno organizzato da WTF Soundsystem. Quella notte è scattato qualcosa: la musica che stavano suonando e quella mentalità del “se lo sai, lo sai”. Non avevo mai vissuto nulla del genere. Era una festa relativamente piccola, ma mi ha aperto gli occhi su un mondo che non avevo mai visto. Inoltre, il fatto che stessero suonando dischi in vinile sotto un ponte polveroso mi ha fatto sorridere. Da quel momento, i sound system e la cultura dei sound system sono diventati un pensiero fisso per me. Quando un mio collega più grande mi disse che stava vendendo una coppia di subwoofer front-loaded da 18 pollici e due altoparlanti top, non c’erano più dubbi: avremmo creato un sound system.
Negli anni, la scena di Ostenda e del Belgio in generale è cambiata molto. Come hai visto evolversi la scena underground e che ruolo ha avuto DOF in questo cambiamento?
Quando abbiamo iniziato, la tekno e l’acid music non erano così visibili come lo sono oggi. La maggior parte delle feste era illegale, a meno che non servissero a coprire i costi delle multe o delle spese legali. A parte qualche piccolo free party nel nostro primo anno, ci siamo orientati verso feste legali, perché ci permettevano di concentrarci davvero sull’aspetto produttivo. Questo ci ha anche consentito di far crescere il nostro sound system.
Rispetto a quando abbiamo iniziato, penso che le feste legali siano diventate molto più popolari, introducendo la tekno e l’acid music a una nuova generazione di giovani, molti dei quali stanno iniziando a creare i propri sound system insieme ai loro amici.
“La qualità prima di tutto” è una delle vostre principali filosofie. Come si riflette questa visione nei vostri eventi, sia in termini di scelta musicale che nell’organizzazione generale?
Per noi, organizzare eventi legali significa mantenere vivo lo spirito DIY (fai-da-te) e artistico, ma in un contesto che ci permette di massimizzare l’esperienza per chi partecipa. Organizziamo circa quattro feste all’anno, ma ci mettiamo davvero il cuore, capisci? Invitiamo artisti che ammiriamo, cerchiamo di superarci ogni volta con luci e laser, e puntiamo sempre ad essere il meglio che possiamo.
Organizziamo sempre feste nella nostra città natale, che non è molto grande né centrale nel nostro paese. Però vogliamo che la gente pensi: “Cavolo, che lineup incredibile per un posto così piccolo!” Il nostro obiettivo è portare quell’energia da grande evento, ma mantenendo tutto piccolo e intimo. Per noi è questo il vero significato.
La tekno è una passione che vi unisce. Cosa rende questo genere così speciale per voi? C’è un aspetto della cultura tekno che vi ha fatto innamorare?
Per me è stato sicuramente lo stile dei sound system con stack a tromba per la pista da ballo che mi ha lasciato senza parole. Questo, unito alla natura ritmica e spaziale della musica tekno, mi ha fatto innamorare. Sento davvero che la tekno e la acid music sono generi pieni di emozione—qualcosa di inspiegabile che è unico per loro. Quando tutti sono uniti e sincronizzati sullo stesso groove davanti allo stesso stack di casse, tutto sembra perfetto.
Non c’è molto altro che possa paragonarsi a questo.

In Europa, la repressione degli eventi free tekno è un argomento molto discusso. Come vivete questa situazione in Belgio e come pensate che influenzi il vostro lavoro come organizzatori di eventi?
Penso che il Belgio sia un posto particolarmente difficile per organizzare free party. Negli ultimi anni, molti eventi sono finiti con il sequestro dell’attrezzatura e violenze nei confronti dei partecipanti. Con alcuni teknival molto noti in Belgio che hanno dominato le notizie, ora tutti, anche la nonna, sa cos’è la tekno. Per noi, questo ha messo sotto i riflettori ciò che facciamo. Non so se sia una cosa buona o cattiva, ma so che era inevitabile.
Il vostro annuale free rave al skate park è diventato un evento importante per molti. Cosa significa per voi questo evento e quali sfide avete affrontato per mantenerlo gratuito e accessibile?
Questo è un argomento che mi sta davvero a cuore. Quando eravamo adolescenti, tutto ciò che facevamo era stare al nostro skatepark. Quando abbiamo iniziato DOF, abbiamo organizzato tre feste lì quell’estate—è stato il nostro punto di partenza. Da allora, ogni estate torniamo con tutta la forza per organizzare un free tekno rave, che significa tutto per noi. Sono sicuro che è stato il primo incontro con la tekno e questa scena per molte persone più giovani. È sempre un momento che ci fa sentire che abbiamo fatto un percorso completo, vedere quanto siamo arrivati lontano.
L’anno scorso, c’è stata una petizione con circa 40 firme per fermare gli eventi in quel posto, citando inquinamento acustico. Questo è stato sollevato da un complesso residenziale appena costruito, occupato principalmente da anziani. Una contro-petizione da parte del club/organizzazione giovanile De Kim e nostra ha raccolto circa 1.400 firme.
Come la vedo io, abbiamo dato la nostra prima festa al skatepark, e spero che sia lì che terremo anche l’ultima.
Come il vostro lavoro tecnico, come ingegneri del suono e delle luci, impatta sull’esperienza dei vostri eventi? Quanto è importante per voi che la parte tecnica si allinei con la musica e l’atmosfera che volete creare?
Per noi, questo è il cuore di una buona festa. Diventiamo davvero entusiasti quando si tratta di audio e luci. Io, essendo un ingegnere del suono per il teatro, e Matisse De Groote, il nostro ingegnere delle luci, che è un esperto di teatro e illuminazione, affrontiamo la produzione degli eventi in un certo modo. È ancora un approccio DIY, ma cerchiamo di raggiungere il più alto standard di produzione possibile. Il locale dove di solito organizziamo le nostre feste non è molto grande né molto alto, ma grazie alla nostra esperienza e alle nostre rispettive professioni, riusciamo a ottenere il massimo. Catturare quella vibrazione da grande festa in un contesto piccolo e intimo—è questo che conta per noi.
Il Belgio ha una lunga tradizione di musica elettronica underground, ma la scena sta affrontando sempre più pressioni. Come vedi il futuro della scena musicale belga e come pensi che la cultura musicale possa coesistere con la repressione?
Personalmente credo che ci sarà sempre una cultura musicale underground finché esisterà la cultura giovanile; vanno di pari passo. Dove c’è una volontà, c’è sempre una strada. È in continua evoluzione, certo, ma sempre presente in un modo o nell’altro. Soprattutto qui in Belgio, ho notato molto supporto pubblico per le rave e la cultura rave. Molti dei genitori delle persone che vanno a queste feste facevano rave negli anni ’80 e ’90, magari in un contesto diverso e con un genere musicale diverso, ma lo spirito rimane lo stesso.
Un recente articolo sul nostro blog SUM (QUI) esplora il significato del termine Rave. Cosa significa Rave per te?
Per me, fare rave significa vivere la musica che ami nel contesto ideale, insieme ai tuoi amici. Che si tratti di piccoli raduni che organizzi tu stesso o di enormi feste nei magazzini, tutto ruota attorno alla musica e all’esperienza condivisa con gli altri. Ho incontrato tante persone meravigliose organizzando queste feste, perché tutti condividiamo quella passione. Alla fine della giornata, siamo tutti lì per la stessa ragione: IL RAVE.
Guardando al futuro, come vedi l’evoluzione di DOF Soundsystem? Ci sono nuovi progetti, collaborazioni o sfide che ti entusiasmano in questo momento? E quale sarebbe il tuo sogno per il futuro della scena underground, non solo in Belgio, ma in tutta Europa?
Con DOF, abbiamo molti progetti in programma per il 2025! Sarà il nostro anno più attivo. Per quanto riguarda il futuro, in Belgio c’è un sacco di giovani che stanno creando i propri sound system con i loro amici e organizzando rave autonomi. È fantastico vedere tutto ciò, perché significa che la scena è in continua evoluzione. Spero di vedere sempre più di quella mentalità “fai-da-te, I DO IT”. Attualmente stiamo lavorando su alcune collaborazioni per il futuro con alcuni di quei ragazzi. In un contesto ideale, tutti continuano a organizzare rave per le giuste ragioni, e ci ispiriamo a vicenda, proprio come WTF Soundsystem ha ispirato noi. Speriamo di fare lo stesso.
Con l’avvicinarsi dell’evento a Ostenda, DOF Soundsystem è pronto a regalare un’altra notte indimenticabile, fondendo una produzione di altissimo livello con il loro spirito underground inconfondibile.
