One of the most anticipated acts at Atman Festival 2024 is Babylon Joke, an up-and-coming artist from the roster of SUM-Sound Underground Music. SUM also caught up with Babylon Joke to get his take on Atman and what he expects from this new edition of the festival in Portugal.
How long have you known about Atman Festival, and what inspired you to accept their invitation to perform at Atman Festival 2024?
I played only once last year, and they wanted me back again this year. What definitely makes me want to play at Atman is the opportunity to find Psy and prog music alongside our tekno in the same place. This allows me to be heard by an audience that normally wouldn’t have the chance to do so.
When you play at events like this, does anything change in your musical proposal, or does your approach remain free and faithful to your style?
I am well aware that a festival is not a free party where I could play for hours without problems. Without this possibility, a festival like Atman remains a great and beautiful opportunity for me to express myself, which I prefer over certain club nights: the audience is ready to receive and listen to experiments or new proposals, which I cannot afford in other situations.
Involved in the underground scene for over 25 years, how would you describe your musical style, and how has your sound evolved?
It’s too important a question to answer in a few words. We would need to redefine what underground is currently and how tekno music continues to be important in this context. Clearly, my music has evolved in an impressive way. Why? Because the music I compose corresponds to what I feel about the historical moment I am living in, to the present moment.
And tell us a little about your upcoming live performance at Atman festival. Can you give us some more information about it?
In recent years, I wanted to stop and take the time to reflect on the future and the music I want to make/develop. What I like is to surprise people who listen to me by taking the risk of being liked or not. What I want to propose with this live performance is a hypnotic and positive groove.
